Details of Jones’ new contract revealed

University of Hawai'i football coach June Jones could receive $150,000 in bonuses if his team wins a bowl game in each year of his five-year contract, under terms of his new deal released by UH today.

Jones’ new contract — which pays him $800,016 per year through 2007 — is retroactive to July, 2003 and runs to June 30, 2008.

Jones’ original deal was signed in December 1998. But its contents were released in August 2003 after the state’s Office of Information Practices ordered UH to disclose in entirety both contracts, ending more than a four-year battle by news organizations and others to gain details of one of the state’s most prominent figures.

Under the new contract, Jones will receive $400,008 from the university, with the other half being paid by private donors.

Jones will receive $20,000 if his team participates in a non-Bowl Championship Series Bowl game, such as the Hawai'i Bowl, and an additional $10,000 if his team wins.

UH participated in the Hawai'i Bowl last season. UH is guaranteed a berth in the game for a second consecutive year as long as the Warriors win seven or more of their 13 games to become bowl-eligible. In addition, bowl officials have said the game would likely "protect" UH in the future as long as the Warriors meet bowl qualifications.

Other details of Jones’ contract include:

• $20,000 if football team wins Western Athletic Conference Championship;

• $10,000 if Jones is named WAC Coach of the Year;

• $20,000 if Jones is named national Coach of the Year.

Another bonus of $50,000 will be given if the team participates in a BCS Bowl Game. The WAC is not one of the conferences in the BCS.

Missing from the new contract is a $17,500 bonus Jones would receive for each victory over six. Jones earned $175,000 in the win-clause bonus because his teams exceeded the six-victory mark in three of his four seasons.
