Hawai'i beach home for $1M? Dream on

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Ah, the price of living in paradise isn't getting any cheaper.

Not if you're looking to buy beach-front property in East Honolulu or Windward O'ahu. Not even for $1 million, according to an article in the September issue of Honolulu magazine.

While a million bucks can get you a nice home in much of the island's interior and a high-rise condo in the city, "you can't buy a dream house on the beach for a million dollars anymore," wrote David K. Choo.

The story features eight $1 million O'ahu bargains, including a 1,578-square-foot Lanikai cottage sitting on a 10,558-square-foot lot (seen on the magazine cover). The 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom "fixer upper" is going for $995,000.

The article also gives readers a peek into what $1 million can get you on the Mainland. Talk about living large: in Valparaiso, Ind., a 12,088-square-foot home "that looks like the Moana Hotel" with six bedrooms, seven bathrooms and an indoor swimming pool costs a mere $1.3 million.
