More crews join Maui fire battle

WAIKAPU, Maui — A stubborn brush fire continued to burn out of control yesterday as state air and ground forces joined Maui County crews high in the West Maui Mountains. Honoapi'ilani Highway remained open, but officials were urging motorists to use caution.

The fire is estimated to have burned 1,000 acres on the rain-parched slopes between Waikapu and Ma'alaea, reaching elevations exceeding 2,000 feet.

An O'ahu-based Army National Guard helicopter joined the battle yesterday afternoon, as did a state Division of Forestry and Wildlife crew.

The blaze started Tuesday when wind whipped a Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. cane fire, sending it into the mountainous terrain above the Sandalwood and Grand Waikapu golf courses.
