74 seniors named Merit Scholarship semifinalists

Seventy-four Hawai'i high school seniors have qualified as National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.

They are among 16,000 nationwide who have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 8,000 Merit Scholarship awards, worth more than $32 million, that will be offered next spring.

To qualify as semifinalists, high school seniors take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in October of their junior year. Semifinalists represent the top 1 percent of each state's high school graduating class.

At Iolani School, 28 seniors qualified as semifinalists. Punahou School had the second-highest number of semifinalists, with 15.

The following Hawai'i seniors are 2004 semifinalists:

'Aiea High: Jessica Kubo; Baldwin High: Maiko Arashiro; Education Laboratory School: Kurt Cefra, Mychal Okuhara; Hawai'i Preparatory Academy: Aimee Clark, Scott Torborg; Homeschool students: Jonathan Engel in Honolulu, Rachel Jahraus in Hilo, David Lavender in Kamuela.
