Sells defends title in triathlon for women

Tanya Sells defended her title at the fifth annual Niketown Na Wahine Triathlon Sunday against a field that featured a record 280 participants.

Sells, 33, finished in 1 hour, 4 minutes, 14 seconds. The event consisted of a 500-meter swim at Queen's Surf in Waikiki, a 12-mile bike through Kahala and over Diamond Head, and a 5-kilometer run around Kapi'olani Park.

Katherine Nichols finished second at 1:06:25 and Bree Myers third at 1:08:19.

Sells, an emergency room nurse, heads to the nationals next week in Wisconsin, where she will try to qualify for the 2004 World Championships in New Zealand.

CROSS COUNTRY

BYU heads UH field: Two-time defending women's national champion Brigham Young heads the field of the University of Hawai'i Big Wave Invitational Saturday at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course.

Also in the field are UCLA, Houston, UC Santa Cruz, Navy and San Diego State, along with host UH, Chaminade, Hawai'i-Hilo and BYU-Hawai'i.

The men's 5-kilometer race will start at 7:30 a.m., followed by the women's 4K race at 7:50.

The Rainbow Wahine are coming off a victory at the San Francisco Invitational. UH freshman Chantelle Laan finished in 16 minutes, 57 seconds — the only sub-17-minute time among the 46 runners.
