The Buzz

Clash and burn at Metallurgy

Its promoters are touting it as "a serious education in metal." And the lineup of live headbangers at tonight's second outing of the Metallurgy monthly at Anna Bannanas just about assures that someone's gonna get schooled, but good. Set to shred the loft this month are death metal drag queens the Miltons, 2002 KPOI Battle of the Bands winners Apartment 3, and extreme metal junkies Crucible. The music starts at 9 p.m.; entry is $6. For 21 and older. 946-5190.


A free concert at Ko Olina

Island jammers Ho'onu'a performs Sunday after the second annual Steinlager Henry Ayau Men's International Canoe Race. The 32-mile race starts at 9 a.m. in Hawai'i Kai and ends about 12:30 p.m. at Ko Olina Resort and Marina. Ho'onu'a performs at Lagoon 4 at Ko Olina 2:15-4 p.m. Admission is free. 395-4321.

A tribute to grandparents

The Hawaii Children's Discovery Center is sponsoring the second annual Grandparents' Day at its Kaka'ako Waterfront Park site, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday. Parents, children and grandparents can enjoy such activities as sessions for children and grandparents to learn low-impact stretching exercises and an interactive cooking station by Dole Foods to try out easy, healthful recipes. HMSA's colorful 5 A Day friends will host a game booth, give away prizes and offer nutrition information. Grandparents can also learn about senior clubs and activities available on O'ahu, presented by the city's parks department. General admission is $8, and children ages 2-17 are $6.75. It's a woman thing

It's all about girl power. The first Hawai'i Woman Expo kicks off today with the theme "Celebrating Today's Women and Today's Women in Business." The expo features strolling fashion shows, beauty services, wine tasting, new products and gourmet treats. More than 30 motivation, education and wellness seminars are offered, with speakers from Hawai'i and the Mainland, including life coach Denise Jackson, motivational speaker Gwen Fujie and presentation coach Pam Chambers. There will a book signing Saturday with Dr. Linda Wheeler, author of "Ain't Life a Beach," and physicians such as Dr. Laurie Steelsmith available to answer questions. Admission is $3 or $1.50 with an Aloha Festivals ribbon. Hours are 5-10 p.m. today, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday in the Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall. 235-2358, 228-2858.


The royal treatment

Taramati Chanel Thompson wears an original gown from the coronation of King Kalakaua — the bodice and sleeves are original, dating back to 1883; the body of the gown was refurbished in 1950. She is also wearing a Cartier neck adornment.
Experience some of Hawai'i's vibrant fashion history during "200 Years of Hawai'i — The Monarchy Collection," 2-3 p.m. Saturday at Kahala Mall's center stage. The fashion show features authentic and refurbished gowns, holoku and heirloom jewelry and accessories originally worn by Hawaiian royalty, chieftains and ali'i. The show starts off with the fashions of Queen Ka'ahumanu and ends with those worn by Queen Liliu'okalani. Admission is free. 737-1900.


Get up and dance

You can dance, you can jive during Saturday's Dance Fever! dance party. Boogie down to the songs of the '70s and '80s brought to you by Yvonne Elliman, Aura, the Reformers, the J. Michaels Band and Pacific Jamm. Hear the music of Rod Stewart, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Donna Summer, the B-52s, KC and the Sunshine Band and others come alive in Big D's, in the Queen Kapi'olani Hotel. Comedian Bo Irvine is emcee. Doors open at 7 p.m., the show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12.50 in advance and $15 at the door. 922-1941.

Army Community Theatre's season opener for the Sundays @ 2 Matinee Readers Theatre comes to a close at 2 p.m. this Sunday. "Abie's Irish Rose" is a comedy by Anne Nichols about a Jewish boy who marries an Irish girl, leading to a clash between the families. In concert: Lisa Nakamichi

Concert pianist Lisa Nakamichi returns to her roots Saturday for a benefit recital to celebrate the 75th birthday of Ellen Masaki. Now based in New York, the Kailua High School graduate has appeared frequently as a soloist with various orchestras in Japan. Performing with her will be clarinetist James Moffitt, cellist I-Bei Lin and pianist Mark Wong. The evening's program includes works by Bach, Beethoven and Liszt. The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Mamiya Theatre on the Saint Louis School campus. Admission is $20 general and $15 for students, seniors and Honolulu Symphony members. 261-0560.


The sounds of the viola

Violist Steven Flanter performs a solo recital at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Atherton Performing Arts Studio. A member of the Honolulu Symphony since 1989, Flanter is now the associate principal violist. Thomas Yee will accompany him on piano during a program that includes a mix of works by composers ranging from the early to late 20th century. Selections include "Wild Purple" by Joan Tower, "Quatre Visages" by Darius Milhaud and "Piece en forme de Habanera" by Maurice Ravel.
