Makeup sessions

Advertiser Staff and News Services

New York makeup artist Trish McEvoy, creator of a practical and popular day planner for makeup, now has her own line of cosmetics, fragrance and skin care — and a posse she sends out all over the country to teach her approach to beauty. Her right-hand woman, Kitty Pankratz, a former fashion model, is coming to Hawai'i to offer Trish tips in makeup classes, 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday at Neiman Marcus Ala Moana. Classes are free and reservations are a must: 948-7584.

Apropos of women

It's all about the ladies at the Hawai'i Woman Expo 2003 — presenting fashion shows, beauty services and cooking and product demonstrations — today through Sunday at the Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall.

"What I really hope will take hold and take this show to the future are the seminars," said event producer Pat Shine.

The event, presented by TheoDavies Euromotors, will feature presentations on medical, motivational, educational and financial issues, and more.

Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. tomorrow and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $3; $1.50 with an Aloha Festivals ribbon. Details: 228-2858.

Literary freedom

Censorship fighters, unite. Thousands of bookstores and libraries nationwide will celebrate freedom to read during Banned Books Week, tomorrow through Sept. 27. They will mark the occasion with displays and readings of books that have been banned or threatened throughout history, from the Bible and "Little Red Riding Hood" to Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" and Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men."

Hawai'i ranks second

Hawai'i has scored a spot in Child magazine's list of the Top Ten Best States for Babies. (We're second, between California and third-ranked Maine.)

We made the list because we're one of 10 states that require licensed childcare providers to undergo background and child-abuse registry checks; we have made it illegal to penalize an employee because she nurses or expresses milk at work; we offer a wide selection of pediatricians; and we have clean air, the magazine says.

Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Minnesota, Iowa, Connecticut, Vermont and New York also made the list. For more information about the survey and rankings, see www.child.com.
