Kailua athlete swims Catalina Channel

Advertiser Staff

Kailua's Michael W. Miller, 49, a financial advisor, successfully crossed the Catalina Channel on Sept. 14, breaking two ribs at the finish.

Miller finished in 10 hours and 20 minutes, crossing from Catalina Island, 20 miles off the coast of Los Angeles, to the San Pedro Peninsula. The water temperature was in the 60s.

John York, president of Catalina Channel Swimming Federation, was an official observer.

Catalina Channel Association rules require swimmers to clear the water to finish. By doing so, Miller slipped on a barnacle-covered ledge, fell and broke two ribs while finishing.

Family to swim in benefit

A family of former Punahou School student-athletes will take part in the Alcatraz Sharkfest Swim tomorrow to help an ailing nephew.

Waipahu's Tate Matthews will join fellow Punahou alum family members living on the Mainland to help raise awareness for spinal muscular atrophy. Their nephew, Skylar Bahrenburg, 2, suffers from the affliction.

The group will swim the 1›-course in water temperatures in the 50s and 60s.

The event was organized by Maggie Matthews, Tate's younger sister who lives in San Diego. Other family members taking part include Jack and Jeff Bahrenburg, who participated in water polo and swimming while at Punahou in the late 1980s and now live on the Mainland.
