Phengsavath, Withrow lead at Hickam

Joe Phengsavath and Mike Withrow shot 2-under-par 70s yesterday and share a one-shot lead after the first round of the Hickam Invitational at Hickam's Mamala Bay Golf Course.

Troy Frazier, Del-Marc Fujita, Dave Long and John Manumaleuna all shot 71.

Mervin Matsumoto leads the seniors with a 73.

The tournament continues today and tomorrow.



PADDLING

Ayau Men's International: Most of the state's top canoe clubs will compete in tomorrow's 2nd annual Henry Ayau Men's International Outrigger Canoe Race.

The 32-mile race will start at Maunalua Bay at 9 a.m.; first finishers are expected to arrive at the Ko Olina Resort & Marina around 12:30 p.m.

Top contenders include Team New Zealand/Hawai'i, Lanikai, Outrigger, Kai 'Opua and Hui Lanakila.

The race is held in honor of Henry Ayau, a paddler and avid waterman who died last year.

In conjunction with the race, the Steinlager Light Volleyball Championship will be held at the Ko Olina Resort & Marina.

The amateur grass volleyball tournament is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.



VOLLEYBALL

BYU-Hawai'i sweeps: Ashley Moeai had 13 kills and Yu Chuan Weng added 11 as the No. 2 Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's volleyball team swept Western New Mexico, 30-15, 30-28, 30-15, last night in Silver City, N.M., in the Pacific West Conference opener for both teams.

Moeai had a .400 hitting percentage and led the Seasiders (6-2, 1-0) with six blocks.

St. Francis graduate Liz Narkon led the Mustangs (8-6, 0-1) with seven kills.

Chaminade beats UH-Hilo: Freshman Patti Hardimon had 18 kills to lead the Chaminade women's volleyball team to a 30-28, 30-23, 31-29 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo last night at McCabe Gym in the Pacific West Conference opener for both teams.

Valasi Sepulona added 17 kills and 21 digs, and Kahala Kabalis added 15 kills and 11 digs for the Silverswords (5-4, 1-0).

Sara Pilgreen led the Vulcans (3-6, 0-1) with 15 kills, Tiffanie Ollison had 13, and Emily Hutchinson 11.
