A week after knocking off 17-time defending Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Saint Louis, the Kamehameha Schools football team showed no signs of slowing down.

The Warriors, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, blew past Punahou, 42-20, last night before an Aloha Stadium crowd of 5,685.

Kamehameha (4-0, 2-0 ILH) showed a powerful running game led by Sy Cullen (126 yards, two touchdowns on 17 carries) and T.J. Kuahine (53 yards, 12 carries), taking advantage of big holes opened up by their offensive line.

Punahou (2-2, 0-1) saw a similar rushing attack when it surrendered 288 yards to Kailua's Kekoa Sua in its non-league opener four weeks ago.

"They're both solid offensive lines, offensive groups — I don't think there's much difference," Buffanblu coach Kale Ane said. "They've both got great lines and great running backs."

Punahou moved the ball 55 yards on its opening drive last night and took an early 3-0 lead on Chris Takemoto-Gentile's 27-yard field goal, but the Warriors answered with Cullen's 10-yard touchdown run and touchdown passes from Pono Kam to James Hardy and Kawika Vincent to grab a 21-3 lead late in the second quarter.

The Buffanblu got another field goal from Takemoto-Gentile, this one from 23 yards, to cut it to 21-6 at the half.

But Kamehameha quickly stretched the lead to 35-6 midway through the third quarter on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Kam to Matt Coelho and Cullen's 27-yard scoring run.

"Our coaches did a nice job getting us ready, and it looks like we're going in the right direction," Warriors coach Kanani Souza said.

The Wolfpack took a 2-0 lead with 43 seconds remaining in the first quarter when the Raiders' John Takamura downed the ball in the end zone after a blocked punt. Pac-Five made it 8-0 three minutes later when fullback Koa Pickard recovered a fumble in the end zone. The two-point conversion attempt failed.

The Raiders answered with a 39-yard field goal by Wong, then took a 9-8 lead when Kalama snared his interception and raced 75 yards up the right sideline for a score. Their two-point conversion attempt also failed.

Pac-Five lost the ball on downs on the Raiders' 40-yard line on the game's final play.

Iolani running back Raynold Stowers, a 1,000-yard rusher last season, injured his shoulder against Punahou last week and did not play last night. Raiders assistant coach Sam Cropsey said Stowers was cleared to play but sat out as a precaution. Sophomore Mike Hirokawa filled in for Stowers and rushed for 72 yards on 21 carries.
