SEEN ON THE STREET
Loopy jeans and fishnets strut at mall

By Noelle Chun

We went out to prowl the malls and report on what teens and twentysomethings are wearing. Here's what we saw:
  • Denim has made its annual fall entrance. The dirty washes are still there, but embellished jeans are more trendy. Loops, large pockets, stitched designs, and built-in wide belts are common. There are a lot of "folding tints," jeans that look like they were scrunched up and then sprayed with dirt.
  • Made popular by Pink's music video, fishnet tights are on the rise. These are often worn by teens over tanktops or under shorts as tights.
  • Emo guys ("Don't call us that," they wail; but what's the alternative?) wear "old man pants" that look like loose Dockers.
  • Converse sneakers continue to be cool, as do skater shoes and the recently embraced bowler styles.
  • Body piercings are increasingly cool. They seem to transcend all styles, from the AZN look to hip-hop.
  • Cabbie hats for the young women, trucker hats for the guys (very emo).
  • Miniskirts are everywhere. Denim skirts, like the latest jeans, have lots of embellishments, often with zippers or loops. Slightly longer, ruffled skirts are also in fashion.
  • Stripes may not be flattering for your figure, but they're rising in popularity anyway. These are thinner stripes often against an organic hue.
  • Shirts that hang off the shoulders. Also popular at school is cutting regular T-shirts to make them more fashionable and personalized.
