Car takes down two poles in Kahalu'u

A one-car accident in Kahalu'u yesterday morning brought down two utility poles on Kamehameha Highway at Waihe'e Road in Windward O'ahu, slowing traffic.

Police said a car hit a pole shortly after 9 a.m. The impact of the crash pulled down a second pole. The poles at first blocked the road, but police allowed a lane of traffic to pass by directing traffic throughout the day.

Fire officials said the driver was taken by ambulance to Castle Medical Center with minor injuries.

Police reopened the road at about 6:30 p.m.

Man feared drowned found safe on land

A missing swimmer turned up safe yesterday afternoon after city lifeguards, rescue workers and a helicopter searched several hours in waters off Ala Moana Beach Park.

Police said two men were drinking at the beach early yesterday morning and decided to go for a swim at about 4 a.m.

At about 8 a.m., one man told lifeguards that he did not see his friend come out of the water.

Police said the search was called off after they located the missing 22-year-old homeless man at another friend's house in the Sheridan Street area after 3 p.m.
