Facilitators play important school role

A behind-the-scenes victim of Gov. Linda Lingle's spending restrictions is the Parent-Community Networking Center, whose facilitators provide a necessary link between parents and schools.

PCNC facilitators are usually first on the scene in a crisis. They organize volunteers. They smooth relations between schools and parents, set up support groups and get teachers and students and their families what they need.

They're the ones the parents usually go to for answers.

Yet their funding was cut altogether this year at 86 schools, and in other schools, their hours have been slashed. Now that Lingle has freed up $2.3 million to finance the positions, we urge her not to skimp on this go-between service because schools and communities value it highly.
