Two men seriously injured in Ma'ili crash

By Mike Gordon
Advertiser Staff Writer

Two men suffered major injuries when their car crashed during a high-speed race along Farrington Highway in Ma'ili last night, police traffic investigators said.

Both were taken by Army medevac helicopter to The Queen’s Medical Center. The driver, a 19-year-old 'Ewa Beach man, was in serious condition with back injuries. His passenger, a 19-year-old from Pearl City, was in critical condition with back, neck and head injuries.

Queen’s would not release further information today.

The two men were in a green 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse headed north about 8 p.m. on Farrington Highway. Police said they were racing with a 1989 black Honda CRX that was behind them in the same lane.

Witnesses told police the two cars were racing.

As it approached Maipela Street, the driver of the Mitsubishi braked suddenly to avoid two bicyclists crossing Farrington Highway from the beach, police said.

The driver lost control, the Mitsubishi skidded sideways then struck a utility pole and a fence, police said.

Neither person in the Mitsubishi was wearing a seatbelt.

No one in the Honda was injured.

The Honda pulled over and stayed at the accident site, police said.

The exact speed of the Mitsubishi is not known yet. Police are investigating.
