Warrior slotback Owens suspended for two games

Jones declined to elaborate on the violation that led to the suspension. UH hosts Rice Saturday and plays at Tulsa Oct. 4
"This is a tough punishment for Chad because I know how much he wants to play," said Ron Lee, who coaches the UH receivers. "I feel bad for him. Hopefully, he’ll learn from this experience."
Owens practiced today, but did not compete with the first team. After practice, he met with Jones.
The Warriors are now without their top two slotbacks. Right slotback Nate Ilaoa underwent surgery last week to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Ilaoa, a third-year sophomore, will miss the rest of the season.
Owens was the starting left slotback and top punt returner. Jones said Ross Dickerson, who doubles as the kick returner, will start at left slotback.
"Ross is ready," Lee said of Dickerson, a second-year freshman from Saint Louis School. "It’s his turn to get a chance."
Lee noted that Owens, a fourth-year junior, took advantage of an opportunity in 2001, when Britton Komine’s injury opened a spot on the 60-player travel roster. Owens emerged as the Warriors’ top returner, scoring on kickoff and punt returns in the season finale against Brigham Young.
Lee said Dickerson is one of the team’s best after-the-catch runners.
"He’s right up there, second to Nate," Lee said. "His ability to run after making the catch is excellent."
Lee said Dickerson, who redshirted last season, played impressively in spring practice and training camp.
"He needed to relax a little bit," Lee said. "We’re confident he can do the job. But we have a lot of inside (receivers) who have been working hard."
Komine, now the starting left wideout, also can play in one of the slot positions.
