Of wine and no more whining

My girlfriends came up with a great idea for a froufrou-free bridal shower.

It involved good friends, good food and a little wine to help me stop whining about the hassles of wedding planning.

They arranged for a tasting over the weekend at Diamond Head Winery. They crowned me with two toy tiaras, and we bellied up to the bar, where one of my pals gave us name tags with fake "bar names," reminiscent of my single days. (I was my alter ego, Gina, once again.)

Even winery owner Val Texeira got in on the game and pinned on the name tag of her coworker, Dick.

The evening started with a lot of laughs and continued that way as we sampled an array of whites and reds, wrote down our favorites and narrowed the list to a Chardonnay we mixed ourselves.

Our 5-gallon batch is fermenting in a big jug and should be ready to bottle with about two weeks to spare before the wedding. My dad is drawing something for the customized labels, and we'll put the bottles out on tables for our guests.

It's a small sign that things are starting to come together for the wedding.

My dress should be here in a few weeks. I went crazy on eBay over the weekend ordering wedding accessories. The invitations are finished and ready to be addressed. We have a priest, caterer and a band. Our families have made plane and hotel reservations.

The major planning is out of the way, and I'm confident a wedding will take place no matter what else I do between now and Nov. 29.

I'm thinking it's time to adopt a Zen attitude about the rest of it and enjoy the moment instead of getting caught up in what's left to do.
