HONOLULU

Trial ordered on gun charge

A 27-year-old man who was shot and wounded by police after he allegedly pointed a replica gun at officers on Sept. 15 was ordered Monday to stand trial in Circuit Court on charges of terroristic threatening and being a felon in possession of ammunition. Oliver S. Tela, who is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail, will be arraigned on Oct. 6 and given a trial date. Police said Tela's gun had been altered to fire real bullets.


Mo'ili'ili cultural festival planned

The Mo'ili'ili Community Center will host a festival highlighting the cultural and historical background of the community from 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday. The Mo'ili'ili History Project will present The Lay of the Land from 4 to 5:15 p.m. at the center's studio, with lectures about historic water use in the area and landscape initiatives.


WINDWARD

Drug task force to hold hearing

The Joint House-Senate Task Force on Ice and Drug Abatement will hold a public hearing from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Windward Community College's Paliku Theatre. Residents will wave signs before the hearing from 4 to 5:15 p.m. on Kahekili Highway between Kea'ahala Road and Kahuhipa Street. Speakers including U.S. Rep. Ed Case, U.S. Attorney Ed Kubo and city Prosecutor Peter Carlisle.


Fishpond hosts restoration day

Waikalua Loko Fishpond will host a pond restoration and educational day from 7:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Kane'ohe landmark at the end of Kulauli Street. Volunteers will meet at Pu'ohala Elementary School. Pickup truck hits pedestrian

An elderly man suffered critical injuries when a pickup truck hit him in Mililani yesterday afternoon. Details of the accident were not available last night. The man was a pedestrian and was hit by a Ford pickup shortly before 5:45 p.m. at Meheula Parkway and A'a'ahi Street, a fire official said. The man was flown by an Army medevac helicopter to The Queen's Medical Center.


EAST HONOLULU

Crime targeted in Niu Valley

A recent rash of burglaries has prompted Niu Valley residents to resurrect their Neighborhood Security Watch program. Members plan to meet with police on Oct. 28 for training. They plan to create an association, put out a monthly newsletter and launch a Web site that can be updated with crime data and tips on how to prevent crimes. About 75 people turned out for the second meeting last night. The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Niu Valley Middle School library.
