THE LEFT LANE
Close to Home joins lineup

Advertiser Staff

In April we launched several new comic strips. We have since asked you to let us know what you think. As expected, various comics had their partisans. However, there was no single overwhelming demand for a single comic's return. We appreciate your responses to the changes we have made.

Overall, we've had good feedback about our new comics. Like you, we are pleased with the new strips. But we think there is one more change that would enhance the lineup.

Close to Home debuts today, replacing Go Figure. It's a new comic with an appreciation for the gentle absurdities of American life. Upstate New Yorker John McPherson, who illustrated "Chicken Soup for the Soul: Cartoons for Moms," is the creator. The comic appears in nearly 700 newspapers.

Russian ballerina fired for big finish

And you wonder why little girls who dream of becoming ballerinas can end up with eating disorders. Anastasia Volochkova, a top Russian ballerina, was fired last week for being too big for her tutu — all 5-foot-6, 110 pounds of her.

The official reason for her firing, the Bolshoi Theater said, was that she was too heavy for her male partners — one had to be hospitalized recently with an injury after lifting her, company officials told her, and one by one, the company's men refused to dance with her.

But perhaps it was her diva-like image that was too big for the dance company. The 27-year-old dancer is going toe-to-toe with the Bolshoi Theater, threatening to sue its managers over her firing and accusing them of spreading lies about her.

Dine and be kind to KCC program

About 50 "grazing" tickets remain for tomorrow's Ho'okipa 2003 dinner and silent auction fund-raiser for the culinary arts and hospitality program at Kapi'olani Community College. Event chairman Kelvin Ro says a fire that destroyed the Cannon Club adds urgency to the effort. The building was to become a training center for the program, and will have to be rebuilt.

The event, 6 p.m. at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, will include a nice bit of nostalgia: Robert Cazimero and the Gentleman of Halau Na Kamalei return to the beautiful Monarch Room overlooking the lawn. Grazing tickets (no reserved seating) are $100; call 734-9570.

'Imagine' your kids exploring the spotlight

Kids can get up and active with Honolulu Theatre for Youth's Fall drama program, Imagine, which runs Saturdays from Oct. 4 to Nov. 15, at Manoa District Park or Halawa District Park on varying days.

The program, open to ages 5 to 11, encourages students to dive deep into a drama adventure, exploring themes through story building, creative movement, improvisation and activities. On the final day, students will share what they learned with family and friends.

Tuition is $90. Deadline to submit applications is Monday.
