Tonight's Must-See

 •  Tonight on News 8

• At 5, 10: If your dog or cat has an accident and needs life-saving help, you can't call 911, so what do you do? In tonight's News8 Extra, find out how to learn everything from helping a choking pet to performing CPR.
"ER" season-opener, 9 p.m., NBC. In a wildly uneven hour, "ER" has some powerful emotional moments and some quiet shrugs. Maybe it will always be like that. Last season ended with Carter in the war-torn Congo. Now Carter has returned to find the usual frustrations. The hospital is being remodeled, with Weaver on a rampage against workmen. Soap-style complications persist: Abby is mad at Carter, and Pratt is obsessing over a med student (Parminder Nagra of "Bend It Like Beckham").

Of Note

"Friends" 7-7:50 p.m., NBC. In an extra-long season-opener, the friends try to unravel the complications of last season's finale, in which Joey and Rachel kissed in Barbados. Now they have to deal with Ross.

"Survivor: Pearl Islands" 7 p.m., CBS. It's time to throw a second person off the island.

"Threat Matrix" 7 p.m., ABC. Tonight, there's a link between a drug lab in Utah and a plan to bomb a Veterans Day parade in Washington, D.C.

"Will & Grace" 7:50-8:30 p.m., NBC. Here's another expanded season opener. Grace's husband, Leo (Harry Connick Jr.), suspects she's having an affair.

"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" 8 p.m., CBS. The season-opener is the first half of a two-parter. A husband and wife are found murdered in different places.

"Coupling" debut, 8:30 p.m., NBC. On British TV, this is a terrific comedy with clever takes on romance, sex and life. Oddly, the opening episode of the American version — using a British script almost word-for-word — is barely adequate. It lacks variety, packing together so many sex jokes that they lose effect. Still, the six actors are appealing and there are some fine British scripts from which to borrow. This could emerge as a winner.

"Without a Trace" 9 p.m., CBS. A bus has disappeared with 13 teenagers on board.
