ACLU legal director to leave state to teach

Brent White is leaving as legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Hawai'i on Oct. 1 to take a teaching position at Kansai University School of Law in Japan. But first, White is scheduled to spend several months as a visiting scholar at Chiang Mai University in Thailand.

During his nearly four years as legal director, the Hawai'i chapter of the ACLU was involved in a number of high-profile legal actions, including several First Amendment cases involving religion and political protests.
Brent White took part in many high-profile cases.
"Brent has been an indefatigable advocate, and Hawai'i was fortunate to benefit from his talents. We wish him the best," ACLU-Hawai'i executive director Vanessa Chong said.
Susan Dorsey has been named interim legal director while the search for a permanent legal director is conducted.
Dorsey is a graduate of the University of Hawai'i William Richardson School of Law. She recently completed a three-year clerkship with Judge Daniel Foley of the state Intermediate Court of Appeals.
