Stings close Hanauma Bay

City parks officials closed Hanauma Bay to swimmers at about 3 p.m. yesterday after more than 30 people reported being stung by Portuguese man-of-war.

Ocean safety and parks officials said the 30 stings occurred in a one-hour period preceding the closure. Officials will monitor the situation to determine when to reopen the popular beach.

Beachgoers are advised that any beach that has steady onshore winds may be affected by Portuguese man-of-war. If stung, people should flush the area of the wound with clean saltwater.
