Navy picks contractor for housing

By Dan Nakaso
Advertiser Staff Writer

A hui of Mainland companies under the umbrella Hawaii Military Communities LLC has been selected to build the first of the Navy’s privatized military housing, the Navy announced today.

The entire scope of the Navy’s housing project includes more than 6,000 homes. But a Navy statement only mentioned the first phase of the project, which includes 1,948 units in the Halsey Terrace, Radford Terrace, Moanalua Terrace, Hokulani and McGrew Point housing areas.

The value of the phase one contract is estimated at

$358 million.

Navy officials said they did not know if Hawaii Military Communities LLC also has been selected for the remaining phases.

The principal members of Hawaii Military Communities LLC are Forest City Enterprises Inc. and C.F. Jordan LP, which built the Navy Exchange and Commissary at Pearl Harbor.

Officials from Forest City did not immediately return telephone calls seeking comment. Representatives for C.F. Jordan could not be reached for comment.

The Army already has selected California-based Actus Lend Lease to build and renovate 7,700 O'ahu homes for a contract valued at $1.7 billion. The Air Force is scheduled to select a builder for its much smaller housing project next week .
