Man found hurt on sidewalk ID’d
Detectives now know the identity of a critically injured man found last week on a Waikiki sidewalk, but they still have no clue about how he got there or even if he was assaulted.
After asking the public this week to help identify the man, a caller yesterday identified the 72-year-old man from his tattoos, said Honolulu Police Detective Letha DeCaires.
She would not release his name, however, saying he was still in critical condition at The Queen’s Medical Center. He is not expected to survive, DeCaires said.
The man was found Sept. 15 collapsed outside 1911 Kalakaua Ave. There were no signs of an assault.
"We don’t know what happened to him," DeCaires said. "We were looking to see if he was robbed or if he had an aneurysm. He was in pretty good shape. We found some personal effects on him but no wallet."
Police are trying to locate family members, she said.

The boy’s Nanakuli High School teacher saw him spit on her classroom floor about 8 a.m. and when he walked away, she confronted him, police said.
The boy allegedly pushed the teacher and slapped her, police said.
Police are still investigating the case.
Waialua fire to burn itself out
A brushfire that threatened homes in Waialua on Wednesday is being allowed to burn itself out, fire officials said today.
The fire, which burned about 1,000 acres, still smoldered in a few areas this morning in a gulch, said Capt. Kenison Tejada, department spokesman. He said no homes were threatened.
Firefighters finished battling the blaze at 5 p.m. yesterday. They are not sure if it started Wednesday or was part of smaller fire that began Tuesday, Tejada said.
