THE LEFT LANE
Santa gets dolled up

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Seven years ago, Ione Adams' first Santa dolls show featured 35 Kris Kringles. But Adams retired from her job as fine-apparel manager at Neiman Marcus earlier this year, meaning she's had more time to be Santa's little helper, er, builder.

The latest Santa doll tally is up to 110, even though she says each one takes about 80 to 100 hours to make.

Adams' annual display and doll sale will be held at the Ward Warehouse conference room on the second floor from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow. On display will be Chinese Santas, Korean Santas, Japanese Santas, Indonesian Santas, even Hawaiian Santas with protea-, kukui- and 'ulu-print Hawaiian quilts. For more information, reach Adams at 561-3374.

On God and country

Is government money being used to proselytize religion? Should taxpayers' money be used for faith-based initiatives, a hot topic with the Bush administration?

"Now with Bill Moyers" will tackle these issues tonight in the first part of a two-part airing, discussing how some of these initiatives have benefited their communities and examining contentions that some of these faith-based programs may not be simply serving communities but pushing religion.

"Now with Bill Moyers" airs at 9:30 on PBS. The second half airs Oct. 10, when NOW reports on the changing relationship between church and state in America and asks: Should religion and government mix?

A touch of magic

Kelvin Chun
Kelvin Chun of Salt Lake is a renaissance man of sorts.

The technology specialist at Nu'uanu Elementary School is an award-winning teacher, magician, "balloonologist" and kite enthusiast. His most recent honor was winning first place earlier this month in a stage magic competition at the Texas Association of Magicians 2003 Convention. Chun, 44, also placed second last month at the Pacific Coast Association of Magicians Convention's Balloon Olym-pics in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was selected as one of three national winners of the 2002 Ed Tech Leaders of the Year award by Technology & Learning magazine, a trade publication. Catch Chun's magic and balloon shows evenings at TGI Friday's on Ward Avenue or at Ronnie's Ice Cream Parlor & Restaurant in 'Aiea. For times and days, call 533-2486.

Dog's reality doubtful

Duane "Dog" Chapman
CBS can't confirm bounty hunter Duane "Dog" Chapman's claim that he's going to be a reality TV star.

The "Dog," who gained notoriety after stopping convicted rapist Andrew Luster's life on the lam by tackling him outside a taco stand in June, claims a pilot for the CBS reality show "Beware of the Dog" will start filming next month in Hawai'i and air during November.

Chapman says the project is in connection with Lighthearted Entertainment's Howard Schultz, the same producer who brought the world "Extreme Makeover."

CBS says plans to make the Dog a star is an extreme long shot. Schultz could not be reached for comment.

"It's dead, at least with us," said Jennifer Gunderson, CBS media relations coordinator in Los Angeles. "The project went away."
