Schools vie for best in business

Wearing their best business suits and armed with 20-minute computer presentations, 41 teams from 14 public high schools across the state recently defended their business and marketing plans in the first Hawaii High School Business and Marketing Plan competitions.

Wai'anae High School won the marketing competition. Its team members were Jaycyne Raymond, Michael Holt, Nicole Delos Santos and Cordeiro Krystle. Waipahu High School took second place and Moanalua High School was third.

Kalani High School swept the business plan competition, taking first, second and third places. First-place team members were Robert Fuke and Alexzis Fujiki.



Zoo Society names director

Keith Patterson is the new executive director of the Honolulu Zoo Society. He succeeds Barbara Thacker, who will resume management of the society's volunteer program.

A native of England, Patterson has a wealth of experience in nonprofit management, community relations and special-event planning. For five years he was festival coordinator for the Contra Costa County Earth Day event in California.



Association has new leadership

The Hawaii Chapter of Healthcare Financial Management Association has elected new officers. They are: Stephen Lung, president; Dean Tateyama, president-elect; Keith Ridley, secretary; and Jodi Nakamura, treasurer.

Directors are Brian Higgins, Michelle Kakazu, Pauline Osborne and Kathleen Cain.



Page designer honored

Elizabeth House, a page designer at The Honolulu Advertiser and a former sports writer at the Greensboro (N.C.) News & Record, is to be inducted into the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Athletics Hall of Fame tomorrow. House, a 1982 UNC-Greensboro graduate, covered the Spartan men's soccer team during the 1980s, when the team won five NCAA Division III championships.



KHON manager wins election

Susii Hearst, regional sales manager of KHON Fox 2, has been elected president of the Hawaii Advertising Federation for 2003-2004. She was previously president of the Hawaii Association of Broadcasters and has been active in Junior League and Sales and Marketing Executives of Honolulu.

Outgoing president Page Gaylord of Laird Christiansen Harris Advertising has become vice president; Janet Scheffer of Mana Means Advertising and Public Relations is secretary and Sheri St. Germain of Honolulu Publishing is treasurer.



Group elects new officers

The Association of Legal Administrators has elected officers for 2003-2004: Ann Hisamoto, Cades Schutte, president; Wayne Yoshimura, Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel, vice president; Linda Hammel, Oshima Chun Fong & Chung, secretary; Lori Isaki, Reinwald O'Conner & Playdon, treasurer; and Blane Fujiwara, Char Sakamoto Ishii Lum & Ching, immediate past president.
