It was running back Avion Weaver in 1999, running back James Fenderson in 2000, quarterback Nick Rolovich in 2001 and receiver Britton Komine last year.
And it is why Jones, faced with replacing suspended slotback Chad Owens for the next two games, predicted: "Somebody will step up, another star will be born."
Jones said Ross Dickerson, a second-year freshman who will replace Owens at left slotback, or receiver/quarterback Se'e Poumele are poised to be the next Fenderson. Three years ago, Fenderson, who joined UH as a nonscholarship player and spent time living in his car, ascended the depth chart to eventually lead the Warriors with 651 rushing yards. Fenderson now plays for the New Orleans Saints.
Jones said he tells backup players: "Be ready, because you never know when you'll get your chance."

In Jones' system, starters receive about two-thirds of the repetitions in practice, with the balance going to the second-team players. But every drill is videotaped, and Jones said he constantly evaluates scout players, who simulate the opposing team's schemes.
"I can tell on our scout team who can play and who can't play," Jones said. "I have an idea who can step in and do the job. I'm not surprised when somebody goes into a game and does well."
Linebacker Matt Wright played on the scout team for three years before securing a starting job during the middle of the 2001 season. Defensive back Keith Bhonapha didn't earn significant playing time until last season, his fifth at UH. Bhonapha is now a graduate assistant coach.
"We have some guys on the offensive line who have stepped in and done very well this year," Jones said. "We're on the verge of having a lot of young players defensive players who are going to be very good for us in the future. They'll get their chance. The more chances that guys have to get into the game, the better they become."
