Mission sets festival date

The Izumo Taisha Mission will have its annual Thanksgiving Festival at 2 p.m. Oct. 5 at 215 N. Kukui St., across from the Chinese Cultural Plaza.

The 97th annual Omatsuri festival will include a 2 p.m. Mikoshi Gojinkyo (carrying of a portable shrine), followed by ceremonies and entertainment, including Hanayagi Ryu dancing and Bondo Ryu dancing.

Church plans benefit dinner

Kaumakapili Church is planning a capital fund- drive dinner for Nov. 2 to help pay for its $2.5 million renovation.

The church recently discovered wood rot in the bell tower, adding to the cost of the project. They expect to have the renovation finished in time for their Christmas Eve service, said Henry Maunakea, a member of the church.

The dinner event begins at 5 p.m. at the Monarch Room at the Royal Hawaiian, 2259 Kalakaua Ave.; $70.

'Aloha weeks' at Unity Church

Unity Church will present its free "Six Weeks of Aloha — From the Inside Out" program with kupuna, healers, chanters, halau and entertainers.

For six consecutive Sundays beginning 1 p.m. Oct. 5, the 1›-hour program will focus on components of Pilahi Paki's five-word definition of aloha (akahai, lokahi, olu'olu, ha'aha'a, and ahonui). There also will be mele, chant, dance and a discussion of the ceremony of ho'oponopono.

Participants include Kamake Kanahele, Kauila Clark, Nalani Olds, Keone Nunez, Serge King, Dr. Terry Shintani, Kawika Kahiapo, kumu hula Iwalani Tseu, Blaine Kia and Mihana Souza.

A kickoff celebration will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Unity's chapel, 3608 Diamond Head Circle.
