Second-ranked Hawai'i extended several streaks last night, opening its Western Athletic Conference volleyball season with a 30-22, 30-19, 30-20 victory over San Jose State before 875 at The Event Center in San Jose, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine (12-1) have won their past 11 this year, and past 75 against WAC competition dating back five years. The Spartans (2-10) have lost their past four.

All-American Kim Wil-loughby led Hawai'i in its first road match of the year, collecting 18 kills and five aces, and hitting .452. Lily Kahumoku added 11 kills — all but four in the first game — and a team-high nine digs.

Maja Gustin had eight kills, hit .583 and was in on five of the Rainbows' nine stuffs. The UH wall stifled SJSU's Kimberly Noble, who was averaging more than five kills a game. She hit zero with nine kills and as many errors.

"Maja was really elevating tonight, making herself a threat and that's really good for our team," UH coach Dave Shoji said. "And her blocking technique was a lot better. It's something she's worked really hard on the last month."

Gustin agreed: "We've worked so much on blocking, focusing on it because it's been a weak point. It's working."

All 12 players that made the road trip played and all but two — backup setter Cayley Thurlby and libero Melissa Villaroman — had kills. UH out-hit San Jose .416 to .131.

Hawai'i's first block, by Gustin and Nohea Tano, gave it a 20-17 advantage in Game 1. The Rainbow Wahine scored 12 of the game's last 17 points, then ran away from the Spartans again in the second with a 14-5 surge.

UH scored the first six points of Game 3 and SJSU never got within five again.

Hawai'i plays a non-conference match at 16th-ranked Santa Clara tomorrow before returning home.

Fresno State plays at the Stan Sheriff Center Thursday and Nevada comes in Saturday. Both team's played in last season's NCAA tournament.
