The Red Raiders, ranked second in The Advertiser Top 10, improved to 4-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association East, but more importantly, gave themselves an edge in case tiebreakers come into play later in the season since only the top four teams advance to the OIA Division I tournament.
Two of four interceptions against Governors' quarterback Eti Atonio and a lost fumble led to three Kahuku touchdowns. An unintentional onside kick by Kahuku also eventually turned into a TD.
"We made too many mistakes tonight," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. "They made less mistakes than us. Big ball game. You can't make too much mistakes."
Cornerback Toriano Taulogo had two interceptions; one led to Kahuku's second TD of the game and his second set up the Red Raiders' sixth score late in the game.
"We're ready this season," Kahuku coach Siuaki Livai said. "We've been working hard this season. Very hard."
Kahuku spread the wealth. Eleven different players ran the ball; quarterback Waika Carvalho led the pack with 58 yards on 10 rushes; running back Dustin Huddy, who scored on TD runs of 14 and 2 yards, had 50 yards on seven carries. Running back Darren Magalogo, who scored off an option lateral on the final six yards of a 25-yard play, had 42 yards.
Kahuku used its talent to the maximum. Spencer Hafoka, a backup quarterback last year, took a lateral and completed a 45-yard pass to Tevita Ofa to the Farrington 20 to set up Kahuku's first TD of the game, a 14-yard run by Huddy.
After Taulogo's first pick, Kahuku marched 58 yards on 12 plays with Bronson Ponciano-Ahue scoring from the 1 on fourth-and-goal to make it 12-0 with 10:11 left in the second quarter.
Farrington fumbled on its first play from scrimmage to start the second half, the second of three lost fumbles by the Governors, giving Kahuku possession at the Farrington 45. Three plays later from the Governors' 25, Carvalho went left on an option-keeper before pitching to Darren Magologo at the 6, where he finished off the run with a TD to make it 18-0.
The Governors made it a game early in the fourth quarter when Jostin Waialae dragged the Kahuku defense with him en route to a 10-yard TD run. Ropeti Gafa's PAT pulled Farrington to 18-7.
But Kahuku rolled back with running back Manu Ngatikaura's 18-yard TD run. Carvalho connected with Frank Bracewell for the two-point conversion that made it 26-7.
Kahuku's Mau-he Moala recovered an unintentional onside kick at the Farrington 37. Seven plays later, Huddy scored on a two-yard run to make it 34-7.
Afa Bridenstine intercepted Atonio on Farrington's next series at the Farrington 22. Two plays later, Hyrum Moors scored on a six-yard run that made it 40-7 with 3:20 left in the game.
Farrington fumbled for the fourth time on its next series and later was intercepted with 8 seconds left.
"We still have problems with fundamental stuff," Okimoto said. "You play good teams, it's going to come back and hurt you."
