The Moanalua High School girls volleyball team has had plenty of time to adapt to its new persona — different coach, no Patti Hardimon — and yesterday left little time for Farrington to adjust to the 2003 Menehunes.

Moanalua improved to 5-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Eastern Division with a 25-10, 25-22 sweep over the visiting Governors. Farrington fell to 4-1, with matches against Kalani (5-0) and Kahuku this week.

But while the Govs are in the thick of their schedule, the Menehunes had ample time to get used to new coach Tommy Lake and the graduation of Hardimon — a Chaminade freshman who was an East Co-Player of the Year in 2001 and a second-team Advertiser All-State selection last year.

"This was our first big test," said Menehunes junior Danie Hout, who finished with a match-high nine kills yesterday. "Patti wasn't just a good player, she also was a leadership figure for us. We had to learn to play without her and Ashley (Gandauli, another 2003 graduate). We had to move on."

Moanalua moved fast yesterday, running off six straight points to take a 9-3 lead in the first game, then expanded the advantage to 13-4, 19-7 and 22-8 by capitalizing on several Farrington errors.

The Governors had seven hitting errors and three serving errors in the first game.

"The way we started was disappointing, because we actually had a good week of practice," Farrington coach Jenic Tumaneng said. "You can't make that many errors against a team like Moanalua."

The Govs regrouped in the second game, which was much closer as neither team led by more than three. But with the score tied at 22, Moanalua got a solo block by Kepua Lee, a net violation by Farrington and a kill by Lee to win it.

Lee finished with seven kills, and Sunshine Misa-Uli led the Governors with seven kills.

"We knew Farrington would be a challenge, and sure enough, they were," said Lake, a former JV coach at Kamehameha. "They're very athletic. The East is really tough, but our girls are comfortable on the court now."

Lake credited senior outside hitter Resina Nataniela for providing leadership.
