'Idol' auditions today for Hawai'i hopefuls

This is the day, folks.

It's time to think positive, to start reaching for the moon in your quest for stardom.

"American Idol" comes to town today for a week of pop singer auditions that will be aired on the Fox-TV show starting in January.

The hit TV program, launched last year, is a cultural phenomenon that drew a record 38 million viewers for its season finale this year. Its judges — Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul — have become household names, and winning the contest can launch an entertainment career.

Thousands of would-be pop idols are expected to begin lining up at Aloha Stadium early this morning for their shot at the big time. The first-ever Hawai'i "Idol" auditions take place today and tomorrow.

"It's your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and you have to give it your best shot," said David Goffin, supervising producer of Fox's star-making show.

Goffin, who has been involved in the city cattle calls this year, said this last tryout of the year in Honolulu promises to be the most exciting, with hype, hope and hysteria running rampant.

"We had 12,000 in New York, and we're anticipating huge crowds for Honolulu," he said. "It's our last city, and the last city traditionally is the most interesting, with really good people who can't make one of the earlier auditions, for whatever reason, showing up for the finale.

"They always feel that this is the moment; the message boards are full of people who couldn't make L.A., Atlanta, Houston and San Francisco making their way to the last city."
