In need of professional help

• The Wedding Planner's Web log

Kathy Porter, a "certified wedding specialist," came to talk to me the other day to discuss wedding-planning insights.

It sort of made me feel like an "uncertified, never-wed clueless person" who is apparently in need of professional help.

Porter, who deals with more than 350 weddings a year at Aloha Bridal Gallery, is used to wedding novices such as myself.

She made me think of things that had not crossed my mind, such as the possibility that someone might steal all of the gifts at my wedding reception.

I never realized how many jobs I could potentially delegate for my wedding.

It's not as simple as baker, florist, minister, photographer.

Now I need a gift-watcher.

My mom wants to know if we need to hire a bathroom attendant. She's budget-conscious but completely serious that this could be a legitimate need.

I think guests can deal with the restroom situation on their own, but I mentioned it to my fiancé to see what he thought. He looked at me as if I was clearly in need of professional help, and not of the wedding-planning variety.

One of my friends has agreed to act as coordinator on the day of the wedding. I am supposed to give her a list of what the vendors are to provide and when everyone is supposed to be where.

Another friend just told me about her brother's upcoming wedding and the bride's minute-by-minute schedule of wedding day activities down to how early the coffee would be brewed the morning before the 5 p.m. ceremony. To me, that's kind of like sending out a Christmas newsletter filled with too much information when a "Merry Christmas" would suffice.

Am I really supposed to hand out some sort of schedule for the wedding party? Wouldn't "Be at 'X' place at 'Y' time" be enough?

My mom just mailed me a three-inch binder filled with expert tips to help me organize my wedding. Clearly, I'm in need of professional help. I just hope it won't require years of therapy.
