Groups to get anti-drug money
Anti-drug groups on the Big Island and Lana'i will receive federal grants to help fight illegal drugs in their communities, members of Hawai'i's congressional delegation said yesterday. The two grants totaling $200,000 come from the federal Drug Free Communities Support Program.
The North Hawaii Drug-Free Coalition in Waimea and the Coalition for a Drug Free Lanai will each receive $100,000.
"These grants are important in helping to combat illicit drugs such as crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as ice that lead to social problems and criminal activity," said Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawai'i.
The grants will be used for drug awareness and family intervention programs, as well as teacher training and increasing the number of student volunteers.
WINDWARD O'AHU
Kailua geology tour planned
The Ko'olau eruptive center was formed 2 million years ago and a catastrophic collapse of the Windward side created the mountain range familiar to all today. All of this will be explained in a geology tour of Kawainui Marsh and the Kailua Ahupua'a from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
The tour will be conducted by Floyd McCoy, geology professor at Windward Community College. The tour is limited to 25 people. To reserve a space call Ric Guinther at 247-4906 or e-mail him at guinther@hawaii.rr.com. A $5 donation is requested.
