Advertiser Staff

Jessica Kellogg scored at 84:29 off an assist from Heather Hall as Oral Roberts beat Hawai'i, 1-0, in a non-conference women's soccer game at Tulsa, Okla., yesterday.

Oral Roberts (5-4-1) had 22 shots, while Hawai'i (7-3-1) had 12.

Hawai'i's Natasha Kai, the reigning Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, did not play because of a sprained ankle suffered Sunday against Tulsa.

The Rainbows will next host WAC games against Southern Methodist on Friday and Texas-El Paso on Sunday.

VOLLEYBALL

HPU player honored by PacWest: Vera Oliveira became the first two-time Pacific West Conference Player of the Week after leading the 14th-ranked Hawai'i Pacific women's volleyball team to four road wins in five days.

The sophomore setter from Londrina, Brazil, handed out 177 assists in four matches (12.64 per game), including a career-high 66 at Western New Mexico on Sept. 22. She is 27 assists short of 1,500 for her career.

Oliveira added 23 kills with a .441 hitting percentage, and 10 aces, which moved her up to third in the conference with 23 (0.55 apg).

SURFING

Hurley Pro contest: Raymond Reichle and Kekoa Uemura took top honors at the Hurley Pro surfing contest last weekend at the Ala Moana Bowl.

Reichle won the shortboard division and $1,000. It was the first victory of his professional career.

Aaron Naluai placed second, followed by Jamie O'Brien and Kawehi Ponce.

Uemura won the longboard division and $850. Rusty Keaulana placed second, followed by Kai Sallas and Bonga Perkins.

The finals were held in 1- to 2-foot waves. The contest was the first of five in the Macy's E-Series.

The series is designed to help Hawai'i's top young surfers adapt to the rules and formats of professional contests.

ARENAFOOTBALL2

Islanders honored by league: The offices of arenafootball2 named the Hawaiian Islanders as the team with the best marketing plan for the recently concluded 2003 season.

The Islanders established the "You're in the Game" marketing strategy, a weekly TV show and a new logo.

The team also sold 1,250 season tickets, up from just 16 in their inaugural season.

It averaged an announced crowd of more than 3,400 for nine home games at the Blaisdell Arena.

The Islanders hired former Saint Louis School coach Cal Lee prior to the season and improved their record from 5-11 to 11-7, including the National Conference West Division championship and an appearance in the second round of the playoffs.

TRACK & FIELD

Saint Louis names coach: Geoffrey Garvin, a three-time Northern California Athletic Conference champion, has been named track and field coach at Saint Louis School.

Garvin previously served as Iolani School's sprint coach and assistant cross country coach.
