8th-grade math camp offered

Eighth-graders registered for algebra or pre-algebra in the next school year can apply for a two-week algebra camp sponsored by Gear Up Hawai'i this summer.

The camp is intended to help students overcome math anxiety and prepare them for high school math. It is not an accelerated course and does not offer credit. The program is based on the finding that enrollment in rigorous high school math classes is a key indicator of whether a student will attend college.

Approximately 150 students will be selected. All eighth-graders are eligible to apply, but students from Gear Up schools will have priority. A $20 fee covers the entire session.

For more information, visit gearup.hawaii.edu, call 956-3879 or toll-free at (866) 808-GEAR (4327).

The camp will be held 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at:

  • Leeward Community College, June 14-25
  • Waimea Middle School, June 21-July 2
  • Ka'u High School, June 21-July 2
  • Hawai'i Community College (Hilo), June 21-July 2

Two Hawai'i teachers win national award
