Big Island camp in May
Advertiser Staff
The Big Island Basketball Association is sponsoring a basketball camp for players ages 12 through 18 from May 28 to 31 at the University of Hawai'i-Hilo Athletics Complex.
The camp will help improve players' offensive and defensive quickness, shot improvement, strength, conditioning and sports nutrition, according to spokesman Donn Kansako.
Former UH-Hilo star Jay Bartholomew will be camp coordinator for a staff that will also include coaches from around the state as well as three members of the University of Oregon athletics staff assistant men's basketball coach Fred Litzenberger, head strength and conditioning coach Jim Radcliffe, and fitness director Janice Radcliffe.
"We hope to help re-establish Hilo as a major center for youth basketball," Bartholomew said.
The camp will focus on techniques as well as competition. "Teams will be formed and games will be played twice daily so that players can use what they have learned," said Kansako, who has coached high school basketball on the Big Island for 15 years.
Participants will be placed in divisions, based on age, skill and experience levels.
Applications for the camp, which will accept 120 players, are available from Kansako at (808) 963-6680, Bartholomew (808) 982-6760 or at Sports Line in Hilo. The camp's e-mail address is BigIslandBasketball@hotmail.com
Forms also are available by mail at P.O. Box 4124, Hilo, HI 96720.
