UH football puts Manners, Faga on scholarship

University of Hawai'i defensive back Lono Manners and defensive tackle Matt Faga yesterday were awarded football scholarships.

Manners, a 2001 Wai'anae High graduate, played in 12 games last season, mostly on special teams.

Faga, a 2000 Kaimuki High graduate, played two seasons at Fresno City College before transferring to UH. He did not play during the 2002 season while working to complete academic work. Last season, he played in four games.

UH begins 15 days of spring football practice Tuesday.

WATER POLO

UH edges San Jose State: Shannon Carroll scored three goals as the sixth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team completed its home season with a 6-5 win over No. 12 San Jose State yesterday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Carroll put away the game-winning goal in sudden-death overtime while Audrey Harrer, Beth Novick and Makana Whitford also scored for Hawai'i, which improved to 10-9 overall and 4-5 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

The Rainbow Wahine play on April 16 at USC.

SOFTBALL

UHH splits: Sarah Steele pitched a six-hitter with six strikeouts and Hawai'i-Hilo parlayed one hit into a 1-0 victory over California State Stanislaus yesterday in Turlock, Calif.

Stanislaus won the second game, 9-3.

Lisa Jackson opened the first game with a single, moved to second on a walk and took third on Kayla Kahuli's sacrifice. Jackson then scored on a wild pitch.

ARENA FOOTBALL

Islanders third in poll: Coming off a 68-35 trouncing of Central Valley, the Hawaiian Islanders moved up to third in the arenafootball2 coaches' poll.

Hawai'i garnered 171 points, including three first-place votes.

Quad City is No. 1 and Tennessee Valley No. 2.

The Islanders have a bye this week before playing at Louisville April 10. They open at home April 17 against Bossier-Shreveport.
