Hawai'i's Tabion tosses no-hitter

Shannon Tabion pitched a no-hitter and faced the minimum 15 batters as Hawai'i beat Texas-El Paso, 10-0, to sweep a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The game was ended after 4-1/2 innings because of the mercy rule.

The lone Miners' baserunner reached on an error by Tabion, but was erased on a double play.

Denise Dahlberg, April Crowell and Ashley Ruff homered for the Rainbows.

In the first game, Melissa Coogan pitched a two-hit shutout with six strikeouts as Hawai'i beat UTEP, 6-0.

Crowell hit a three-run homer in the first and Ruff went 2 for 3 for the Rainbows.

Last night's contests were the first conference games for Hawai'i, which improved to 20-19 overall. UTEP dropped to 7-27 overall and 0-4 in the WAC.

MORE SOFTBALL

Hilo wins pair: Tara Martinez pitched a three-hit shutout as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Sonoma State, 3-0, in the Easton Tournament of Champions yesterday at Modesto, Calif.

The Vulcans won their first game yesterday, 8-4 over UC San Diego.

Martinez walked two and struck out three, Lisa Jackson batted 3 for 3, and Laura Kimborowicz was 2 for 3 for the Vulcans (22-11).

In the first game, the Vulcans pounded out 16 hits. Lisa Jackson batted 3 for 5 with four RBIs, and B.J. Shimamoto was 4-5.

Hilo will play Seattle and CS Bakersfield today.

HPU loses pair: The Hawai'i Pacific University softball team lost two games yesterday in the Easton Tournament of Champions at Modesto, Calif.

In the first game, Katie Ledbetter and Sarah Carrier each went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Seattle beat the Sea Warriors, 7-5.

Sonoma State collected 11 hits and Kelly Lazzini pitched a five-hitter in a 4-0 victory over HPU.

HPU fell to 13-7.

ULTIMATE FIGHTING

Hilo's "Cabbage" loses: Hilo's Wesley "Cabbage" Correira lost by technical knockout to Belarus' Andrei Arlovski at 1:15 of the second round in last night's UFC 47: It's On! at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

Correira fell to 20-5, while Arlovski improved to 8-3.

In the main event, Chuck Liddel knocked out former light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz in the second round.

BASEBALL

HPU loses: Daron Roberts went 2 for 4 with a grand slam as host Cal State San Bernardino beat Hawai'i Pacific, 10-8, yesterday.

The Sea Warriors' Geoffrey Say, Greg Benoit and Billy Wright each had two hits.

HPU fell to 18-19, and CSUSB improved to 23-13.

The teams will close out their four-game series with today's doubleheader.

FUNERAL SERVICES

Boxing great Fernandez: Funeral services will be held Monday for Hawai'i boxing great Frankie Fernandez, who passed away March 31, at 84.

Services will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at St. Patrick's in Kaimuki. Burial is 12:45 p.m. at Diamond Head Memorial Park.
