Two escape fire in Pearl City

Two people escaped an early morning house fire in Pearl City yesterday suffering minor injuries.

HFD Capt. Emmit Kane said the alarm for the fire at 1686 Ho'ohulu Street came in at 4:11 a.m.

The two residents were asleep, but a neighbor who was awakened by a smoke alarm beat on the door of the house and alerted them to the fire..

About 18 firefighters brought the blaze under control by 4:29. Damage was estimated at $200,000. The cause is under investigation.



WINDWARD

Sewage plant's budget slashed

A state Senate committee has reduced the appropriation for a new wastewater treatment plant in Waimanalo, cutting its budget from $18.2 million to $1.8 million, causing residents to call for a rally at noon today at the Waimanalo Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The plant is owned by the state and operated by the city.



Easter egg hunt at YWCA pool

Children 1 to 10 years old will have to get wet to find their prize at the YWCA Camp Kokokahi Easter Egg Hunt at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the YWCA pool.

Hundreds of eggs will be hidden and children younger than 3 will search in the keiki pool.

Mainland starts Daylight Saving

Daylight Saving Time started at 2 a.m. today.

This means most people on the Mainland turned their clocks forward one hour to get an extra hour of evening sun. The time difference between Hawai'i and the West Coast is three hours, six hours to the East Coast. Hawai'i does not observe Daylight Saving Time, which ends Oct. 31.
