Hawai'i sweeps UTEP in softball

Shannon Tabion pitched a four-hitter as the University of Hawai'i beat Texas-El Paso, 5-0, in the second game of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader yesterday.

Hawai'i won the first game at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium, 4-2.

Tabion, who pitched a no-hitter against the Miners on Friday, walked none and struck out 10.

UH's Tyleen Tausaga and Ashley Ruff both drove in two runs.

In the first game, Melissa Coogan pitched a seven-hitter with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Ruff drove in two runs for the Rainbows, who scored three runs in the fourth.

UH improved to 22-19 overall and 4-0 in the WAC after the four-game sweep of UTEP (7-29, 0-6).



MORE SOFTBALL

HPU wins pair: The University of Hawai'i Pacific women's softball team picked up a pair of shutout victories in the Easton Tournament of Champions yesterday at Modesto, Calif.

In the first game, Jessica Parra threw a three-hitter in a 9-0 win over UC San Diego.

In the second game, Tiari Keliinoi tossed a six-hitter in a 5-0 win over California State-Stanislaus.

HPU's Rachel Lacar went a combined 5 for 8 with two doubles and four RBIs on the day.

The Sea Warriors are 15-7.

Hilo drops two: The University of Hawai'i-Hilo dropped both games yesterday at the Easton Tournament of Champions at Modesto, Calif.

Katie Kemper pitched a six-hitter as Seattle beat Hilo, 9-0, in the first game.

Cal State-Bakersfield beat Hilo, 4-3, in the second game.

The Vulcans dropped to 22-13.



BASEBALL

HPU sweeps: Hawai'i Pacific swept a pair of games from host Cal State San Bernadino, 4-3 and 8-4, yesterday.

Josh Ervin picked up the victories in both games.

In the first game, he pitched five innings of relief.

Ervin then pitched a compete game to improve to 4-0 on the season.

The Sea Warriors improved to 20-19.

Hilo swept: Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo shutout Hawai'i-Hilo in both games of a doubleheader yesterday at Simmons' Field in Kailua, Kona.

In the first game, Nolan Moser pitched a two-hitter in a 19-0 win.

In the second game, Tony Saipe and Bud Norris combined on a two-hitter in an 8-0 victory.

Cal Poly-SLO racked up 37 hits compared to Hilo's four.



TRACK & FIELD

UH's Monroe qualifies: The University of Hawai'i's Tasha Monroe earned an NCAA regional automatic qualifying standard with a distance of 5.98 meters in the long jump at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Austin yesterday.

Monroe finished fourth in the university/college category.

Monroe was the only Rainbow Wahine to reach a qualifying standard at the event.



MEETING

QB Club: University of Hawai'i football coach June Jones headlines the list of speakers for tomorrow's noon meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Pagoda Restaurant.

Warrior mascot Vili Fehoko, former UH athletic director Paul Durham and Ben Yee of the Na Koa football booster club will also appear.
