Cal Poly-SLO pounds Hilo in baseball, 14-4

Sam Herbert, Chalon Tietje, Cory Taillon, Josh Mayo and Drew Gillmore each had two RBIs as Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 14-4, yesterday at Simmons' Field in Kailua, Kona.

The Vulcans committed three errors, and Cal Poly-SLO (28-12-1) scored six unearned runs.

David Chu and Sean Tamura each had two hits for Hilo, which dropped to 7-32.

Cal Poly-SLO swept the six-game series.


MORE BASEBALL

• O'ahu wins AJA title: Moku Paiva batted 3 for 3 with three RBIs to lead a 17-hit attack as O'ahu routed Maui, 16-3, yesterday in the AJA League state championship game at Iron Maehara Stadium in Wailuku, Maui.

O'ahu's Nathan Numata went 3 for 5 with a double, while Brent Shimokawa, the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, had two hits, as did Syd Kinimaka, Timo Donahue, Danny Kimura and Grant Enomoto.

O'ahu's Rich DeSa, Dave Shin, Ryan Yamamoto and Keith Tanaka combined on a four-hitter.

In the consolation game, Kendric Nishioka hit a three-run homer, and Kaha Wong homered and drove in two runs as Hilo beat Kaua'i, 8-6.


SOFTBALL

• Three local teams lose: Chaminade, Hawai'i Pacific and Hawai'i-Hilo all lost their final games yesterday at the Easton Tournament of Champions at Modesto, Calif.

Chaminade (9-26), playing in the championship bracket, lost to San Francisco State, 3-0, behind a five-hitter by Holly Pearce.

HPU (15-8) and Hilo (22-14) lost extra-inning games in the silver bracket.

Grand Canyon (Ariz.) beat the Sea Warriors, 5-4, in nine innings, while Montana State-Billings beat the Vulcans, 3-1, in eight innings.

HPU's Kara Wedemeyer and Brandy Choy Foo each had two hits.

Hilo's Sarah Steele pitched a three-hitter.


GOLF

• Two teams tied for Pro-Pro lead: The tandems of Craig Sasada and Dugal Milne, and Kevin Hayashi and Lance Taketa shot six-under 71s to tie for the lead after the first round of the Aloha Section PGA Pro-Pro Championship yesterday at Ka'anapali Golf Course on Maui.

Sasada is from Kapalua Plantation, while Milne is from Makena. Hayashi is from Mauna Kea and Taketa of Hilo Muni.

David Rau (Kapalua Village) and Travis Henderson (Kapalua Plantation), and Brendan Moynahan (The Experience at Koele) and Ben Hongo (Kapalua Golf Academy) are second, two strokes back.


BEACH VOLLEYBALL

• Ring loses in semifinals: Former University of Hawai'i standout Jason Ring and partner George Roumain lost in the semifinals to Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings in an AVP event yesterday at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The scores were 23-21, 21-19.

In an earlier match, Ring and Roumain beat Dax Holdren and Punahou School alum Stein Metzger, 21-15, 21-15.

Punahou alum Mike Lambert and partner Karch Kiraly lost in the consolation round to Sean Rosenthal and Larry Witt, 18-21, 24-22, 15-11.
