Rainbow pitcher Tabion wins WAC weekly honor

Shannon Tabion of the University of Hawai'i was named the Western Athletic Conference softball pitcher of the week, the conference office announced.

It is the second time this season the junior from Wailuku, Maui, has been honored by the conference.

Tabion threw two shutouts, 10-0 and 5-0, against Texas-El Paso last week, including a no-hitter in the first game.

Fresno State shortstop Christina Clark was named the conference hitter of the week for helping the Bulldogs sweep Louisiana Tech.

Hawai'i (4-0) and Fresno State (6-0), both unbeaten in WA C play, meet in doubleheaders Friday and Saturday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

GOLF

Phengsavath, Smith win Pro-Pro title: Joe Phengsavath and Marc Smith shot a final-round 65 yesterday to win the Aloha Section PGA Pro-Pro Championship by one stroke at Ka'anapali Golf Course.

Phengsavath (not affiliated with a golf course) and Smith (Makaha Resort), who trailed by three strokes after the first round, finished at 133.

First-round co-leaders Kevin Hayashi (Mauna Kea) and Lance Taketa (Hilo Muni) were second.

UH men tied for 15th: The University of Hawai'i men's golf team shot a 617 and is tied for 15th after the first round of the Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate at Lompoc, Calif., yesterday.

The Rainbows are 41 strokes behind leaders UC Davis and Cal State Northridge at LaPurisima Golf Course. There are 18 teams in the tournament.

Hawai'i's leading golfer is Pierre-Henri Soero, who is tied for 15th at 148. Pete Sisich of Northridge is atop the leaderboard at 5-under-par 139.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Leilehua 4, Radford 0: John Olley pitched a four-hitter and Jesse Matsuura singled in two runs as the host Mules beat the Rams in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division game yesterday.

Leilehua, which scored all its runs in the third inning, improved to 4-0, and Radford dropped to 1-2.

Farrington 4, Castle 2: Brian Cabral and Alison Tolentino combined on a five-hitter as the Governors beat the Knights in an OIA Eastern Division game.

Farrington's Matt Bell homered and scored three runs.

Four pitchers combined on a three-hitter for Castle, which committed five errors.
