Avoid money woes

College students represent more than 19 percent of the people who file bankruptcy, and 6 percent of people filing bankruptcy are younger than 21, notes Dave Ramsey, a Christian and author of "The Total Money Makeover" and "Financial Peace." He has this advice for teaching money management to teens (check out more tips at www.daveramsey.com):

  1. Buyers beware. Make smart choices when it comes to purchases.
  2. Yes, even young people should contribute to churches and good causes.
  3. Write down a list of "No Matter Whats" — for example: "No matter what, I will never go into debt."
  4. Start laying out a plan for your future.

Eat like an Egyptian

Research on mummies by two University of Hawai'i professors could result in diet advice good for Americans today.

Robert Littman, professor of classics and teacher of the ancient Egyptian language, tells all tomorrow with "Mummy Talks: The Egyptian Mummy Project" next up in the University of Hawai'i's Downtown Speakers Program.

Littman and UH professor of epidemiology DeWolfe Miller are working with the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt to examine the health and diseases of the ancient population.

"We know their diet was high in grains with a certain amount of fish and not much meat," Littman said. "We're looking for evidence of plaque in the mummies' circulatory systems which could tell us whether atherosclerosis was a problem.

Littman and Miller will start scanning the mummies in June. Their findings — or lack of — could contribute to present-day advice on diet.

"Mummy Talks: The Egyptian Mummy Project," brown-bag lunch talk with slide presentation, is noon to 1 p.m. at the American Savings Bank Tower, 1001 Bishop St., Room 805. Free.
