Under pressure to make fast food less-fat food, McDonald's yesterday introduced a new veggie burger and a low-fat, low-calorie menu line that includes a grilled chicken sandwich on a wheat bun, joining the its "Salads and More" line that includes dinner and side salads, white-meat Chicken McNuggets and the Fruit 'n Yogurt Parfait. The chain also offers a low-carb option any of its sandwiches stripped of the bun and served on lettuce in a salad container.
Here's the nutritional breakdown for the two new items so you know what you're getting before you bite. For McVeggie, 350 calories, 8 grams fat, 0 cholesterol, 48 grams carbohydrate; with cheese, 410 calories, 12 grams fat, 15 milligrams cholesterol, 48 grams carbohydrate. Grilled chicken on wheat: 320 calories, 7 grams fat, 50 milligrams cholesterol, 39 grams carbohydrate.
House of Hong will soon fade away
Another Honolulu culinary landmark is passing: House of Hong, the 40-year-old Chinese fine-dining restaurant at 260-A Lewers St. in Waikiki, will close April 30. Founded by Raymond Hong in 1964, the restaurant is known for slow, sophisticated meals, with the plates changed between each course and a bottle of Scotch offered at every table, and also for the beauty of the surroundings, including the rosewood moon gate, painted silk screens and a relief-work ceiling.
It's open for dinner through the end of the month, said Les Hong, citing falling interest in banquet dining. Furnishings will be sold by McClain Auctions on May 22 (596-3900). The popular Red Chamber Bar will close briefly during the auction period but will reopen in May and remain in operation until mid-2005, when renovation is expected to commence along Beach Walk.
