Dacanay sparks Punahou over Iolani

By Leila Wai
Advertiser Staff Writer

Punahou junior guard Shanna-Lei Dacanay connected when it counted to lead the Buffanblu over Iolani, 39-38, last night in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball game at Punahou.

Iolani's Alana Wall, center, has her shot blocked from behind by Punahou's Eryn Chun (13) in the final seconds of their ILH game.

Dacanay hit two free throws in the fourth quarter to give the Buffanblu the lead for good (36-35) and then hit a layup with about 32 seconds left for a 39-36 edge.

"She's steady and she perseveres and she keeps competing the whole time," Punahou coach Mike Taylor said of Dacanay.

In between Dacanay's four fourth-quarter points, the Buffanblu came up with a solid defensive effort.

"Even though we had the lead for most of the game, it was intense," said guard Eryn Chun, who blocked an Alana Wall shot that led to Dacanay's final layup. "It's not fun without a challenge."

Despite graduating three players — Rachel Kane, Elyse Umeda and Becky Hogue, who all played at Division I colleges this year — Punahou is undefeated and atop the ILH standings at 5-0. Iolani is in second at 4-1.

The teams played to an 8-8 tie in the first quarter, but Punahou outscored Iolani 10-4 in the second quarter utilizing a full-court press that forced five turnovers and denied Iolani a chance to work its offense.

"It forces opponents to make quick decisions and take a few hurried shots; shots out of their offensive sets," Taylor said of the press.

"We expect that from Mike," Iolani coach Glenn Takara said. "He keeps subbing. They have a deep bench and they wear you down."

The Raiders came back in the third, cutting the Buffanblu's lead to 24-23 going into the fourth period.

"They had the tempo the first half, and we wanted to make (the second half) our half," said forward Ginger Gravelle, Iolani's lone senior.

In the fourth quarter the teams traded baskets, before Dacanay sealed the game with her four-point outburst. Iolani's Keilyn Fujioka made a basket before the final buzzer for the final score.

"Both teams played hard, it was a battle in the end," Gravelle said. "It was who wanted it more and who was going to take it strong."

Iolani was led by sophomore Hennasea Tokumura, who scored nine points.

Junior Christine Takara added 11 points for the Buffanblu.

Punahou extended its winning streak to 22 games, continuing from its 17-0 record last season when it won the state title. Its last loss came against Kamehameha in the 2002 state title game.
