'Aiea hangs first loss on Pearl City

By Leila Wai
Advertiser Staff Writer

'Aiea third baseman Tripper Chung turned a rarity into runs, sparking Na Ali'i's 10-8 win over Pearl City in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division game yesterday at 'Aiea Recreation Field.

Chung drove in the go-ahead run with a two-run single to right field with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

In the at-bat before Chung's, 'Aiea catcher Aaron Asher's apparent inning-ending flyout was ruled as catcher's interference to load the bases.

"Because they thought they had it, they were kind of down," Chung said of the Chargers.

"I was just thinking about getting a hit, to score some runs and get on top because the game was tied," he added. "I was just focused on getting a hit."

'Aiea (3-1) went up 9-7 on Chung's single, a huge turnaround from what Pearl City (2-1) thought it had.

"I can't remember the last time we had an interference, not in the preseason and I don't think in happened last year," Chargers coach Mel Seki said. "But it came at an unfortunate time."

Pearl City took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but 'Aiea answered with four runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by shortstop Lance Powell's two-run single to center.

Pearl City closed to 4-3 on pitcher Corey Giammalvo's two-out, two-run double to right in the third, only to see 'Aiea score three runs in the bottom of the inning. Center fielder Dylan Libadisos two-run triple to center field helped Na Ali'i surge ahead 7-3.

Pearl City scored three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie it 7-7.

"A lot of times we thought we were going to take control of the game, but there wasn't a second where I thought we had the game in hand," 'Aiea coach Ryan Kato said.

Chung finally put Na Ali'i ahead to stay with his two-out hit in the fifth.

"They did the things to win," said Pearl City second baseman Michael Higa, who went 3 for 4, with two doubles and a triple and three RBIs. "We didn't execute our plays either and they capitalized on our mistakes."

Pearl City left fielder Casey Fujishige also had three hits, and third baseman Blake Kaneshiro had two.

Na Ali'i first baseman Kepa Wong went 2 for 4, including a double, and Libadisos finished with two hits, including his triple.
