Kihei resort owners plan time-share units

Owners of the Maui Lu Resort in Kihei plan to develop 400 time-share units on the property starting next February.
Owner Genesee Capital of San Diego wants to develop time-share units in buildings one story to four stories tall. The project a redevelopment will include 17 buildings and facilities such as swimming pools, a keiki club, a clubhouse with several restaurants and a retail store.
The County of Maui Planning Department has submitted a draft environmental assessment for the redevelopment, which is on 27 acres along South Kihei Road, according to a bulletin from the state Office of Environmental Quality Control.
Construction is to take place in five phases.
Plans are to demolish and remove the Maui Lu Resort complex on the mauka property. On the makai property, a two-story oceanfront structure will be replaced with a single-story beach club, while two other buildings will be made smaller and renovated.
According to the draft environmental assessment, the shoreline area may undergo beach nourishment, sand dune stabilization and improved public beach access. Also proposed are improvements for traffic flow, including an additional traffic signal, a landscaped median, sidewalks and widening of Ka'ono'ulu Road.
