Floating Worlds of the artist on screen

"Moulin Rouge" is about the life of artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who found his inspiration in Parisian nightlife.
The Doris Duke Theatre will host the "Floating Worlds: Japan & Paris" film series, presented in conjunction with the Honolulu Academy of Arts exhibit "Japan & Paris: Impressionism, Postimpressionism and the Modern Era." The exhibit began yesterday.

Admission for each film is $5 general, $3 for museum members.

The films:

"Utamaro o Meguru Gonin no Onna (Utamaro and his Five Women)"
Japan, 1946, directed by Kenji Mizoguchi. In Japanese with English subtitles.

A portrait of Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806), whose woodblock prints of women influenced French impressionists. The film was made during the American occupation after World War II, and reflects that period as much as Utamaro's era.

"Lust for Life"
U.S., 1956, directed by Vincente Minnelli.

Kirk Douglas was nominated for an Oscar as Vincent van Gogh. Anthony Quinn, as Paul Gauguin, won an Oscar for best supporting actor. The movie includes portrayals of impressionists Pisarro, Seurat, Tanguy, and Toulouse-Lautrec; shots of Japanese prints that influenced the artists; and more than 200 of van Gogh's masterworks.

"Kurosawa"
Japan/U.S./Britain, 2000, directed by Adam Low. In English and Japanese with English subtitles.

A documentary on the life and work of Japan's master filmmaker.

"Donzoko" ("The Lower Depths")
Japan, 1957, directed by Akira Kurosawa. In Japanese with English subtitles.

This is the Hawai'i premiere of a newly restored print. Based on a play by Maxim Gorky, it stars Toshiro Mifune in a comedy/drama about the denizens of a flophouse.

"Moulin Rouge"
Britain/France, 1952, directed by John Huston.

A portrait of artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who, like the Japanese artists he admired, found his subjects in the realms of pleasure and nightlife. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, with Jose Ferrer and Zsa Zsa Gabor.

"French CanCan"
France, 1955, directed by Jean Renoir. In French with English subtitles.

Jean Gabin stars as the Moulin Rouge nightclub owner who rediscovers the cancan and pursues a romance with a dancer. The son of the great impressionist painter, Jean Renoir was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Oscar and the French Legion of Honor award.
