Islanders' Ah Yat takes spot as new No. 2 quarterback

BRIAN AH YAT

The Hawaiian Islanders will go with a new No. 2 quarterback in their second game of the season.

Brian Ah Yat, who was placed on short-term injured reserve before the season opener with a groin injury, made the 19-man travel roster for tomorrow's arenafootball2 game at the Louisville Fire. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. (HST) at Freedom Hall.

Defensive specialist Eddie Klaneski (hamstring) and receiver/linebacker Gabe Amey (hip flexor) also were activated from IR and will play against Louisville.

"It's good to be back out here feeling healthy again," Ah Yat said. "It's good to be back with the team."

Ah Yat replaces Shawn Withy-Allen as the backup to Darnell Arceneaux, who threw for 277 yards and six touchdowns in a 68-35 victory at the Central Valley Coyotes (Fresno, Calif.) on March 27. The Islanders had a bye last week.

"At this very moment, he's our No. 2 quarterback," Islanders head coach Cal Lee said of Ah Yat. "It's week-to-week kind of stuff."

Ah Yat (Chicago Rush) and Amey (Carolina Cobras) played in af1 last season.

"Anytime you have players who come from af1 with the experience they've gotten playing in that league it's a bonus," Lee said.

Klaneski was the Islanders' Defensive Player of the Year last season after recording 63 solo and 40 assisted tackles.

"I've been working hard on and off the field the last couple weeks so I could be back and be 100 percent," Klaneski said. "I'm just real glad to be back and ready to go play this week."

The Islanders' defensive secondary will also include defensive specialist Joshua Robinson, and receivers/defensive backs Anthony Arceneaux and Nian Taylor.

"I've played with everyone pretty much except for Josh, but we've been working together this week and last week so it's been good, and I don't think there will be any problems," Klaneski said.

Taylor, the Islanders' Offensive Player of the Year last season, was unable to make the trip to Central Valley because of a groin injury. He led last season's team with 82 receptions, 1,246 receiving yards, 31 touchdowns and 194 points.

"He was slowed down at the beginning of the season through injuries," Lee said. "He's weathered through the injuries, and he's back to form. He gives us a good added boost on offense."

Also added to the roster was lineman Tiki Sagapolutele, who played for the Islanders and division rival San Diego Riptide last season.

The players who made the 19-man travel roster for the season opener, but were deactivated for tomorrow's game were receiver/defensive back Channon Harris, offensive specialist Mike Miller and lineman Evile Puna.

Nate Jackson can't join Islanders: Former University of Hawai'i safety Nate Jackson can't join the Islanders after being released by NFL Europe's Scottish Claymores during training camp.

Jackson was invited earlier this year to the Tennessee Titans' training camp and assigned to the NFL developmental league.

According to an Islanders official, Jackson is still under contract to the Titans.

Last December, Jackson signed with the Islanders, but a clause in his contract allowed him to join a team at a higher level.

Two years ago, Jackson signed a free-agent contract with Tennessee, but left training camp and returned to Hawai'i to attend to family matters. While here, he contracted a bacterial infection and underwent heart surgery in November 2002 in which a damaged heart value was replaced with a healthy valve harvested from a pig.

Jackson graduated from Wai'anae High School and played for UH from 1998-01.

Fire starter: Tomorrow's game will be the season opener for the Louisville Fire, who led af2 in attendance the past two seasons.

"Being it's their first game of the season, I think the players and fans, it's got to be a great, exciting time for them," Lee said. "People are going to come out, and they want to know what kind of team they have in Louisville."

The Fire averaged 6,280 fans in eight home games last season, and more than 8,000 are expected for tomorrow's game.

Louisville was 5-11 last season, including a 67-48 loss to the Islanders on May 31 at Blaisdell Arena.
