BYUH, HPU capture PacWest tennis titles

The top-seeded Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's tennis team defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 5-0, yesterday to capture the Pacific West Conference championship at La'ie.

The Seasiders, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II, swept the three doubles matches, then got victories from Adrienn Hegedus and Jing Jing Liu in the top two singles to improve to 29-0 on the season. BYUH has won 95 consecutive matches.

BYUH advances to a possible host berth for the the NCAA II West Regional, May 7 to 8. UH-Hilo, ranked 11th in Division II, could also receive a host bid.



MORE TENNIS

HPU men win PacWest: Top-seeded Hawai'i Pacific held off Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 5-2, yesterday in the final of the Pacific West Conference men's championship tournament at La'ie.

HPU, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II and the tourney's top seed, won two of the three doubles matches, then got victories at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to claim the title.

Both teams will play in the NCAA II West Regionals, May 7 to 8.



SURFING

• Irons advances: Two-time defending world champion Andy Irons of Kaua'i was the top surfer in the third round of the Rip Curl Pro yesterday at Bells Beach, Australia.

Irons advanced to the fourth round with a dominating victory of Australia's Ben Dunn.

In clean waves of 3 to 5 feet, Irons opened the 30-minute heat with a near-perfect ride of 9.67 (out of 10) and followed it with a score of 8.83. His two-wave total of 18.50 was the best score of the day. Dunn's two-wave total was 8.50.

Irons is the only Hawai'i surfer remaining in the contest, and is scheduled to face Australia's Luke Egan in the fourth round.

Former world champion Sunny Garcia of Wai'anae was eliminated in the third round yesterday. California's Taylor Knox scored a 6.33 ride in the closing seconds of the heat to defeat Garcia, 11.83-11.24.

Garcia was surfing in a contest for the first time in more than a year after undergoing knee surgery.

The Rip Curl Pro is the second of 12 stops on surfing's elite World Championship Tour.



BASEBALL

UH-Hilo splits twinbill: The University of Hawai'i-Hilo and Sacramento State split a doubleheader yesterday at Simmons Field in Kailua, Kona.

David Chu's bases-loaded single drove in pinch-runner Daniel Hawkins with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the host Vulcans to a 4-3 victory in the first game.

Bret LeVier's sacrifice fly scored pinch-runner John Acha in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 3-all and force extra innings.

In the second game, Pedro Santiago capped a three-run first inning with a two-run single, and singled home a run in the fourth to lift Sacramento State to a 4-3 victory.

UH-Hilo is 9-33, while Sacramento State is 21-22.

The two teams play another doubleheader today at Simmons Field starting at noon.
